He stepped closer, lowering his voice. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to ruin me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t flinch. \u201cNo. You did that yourself when you decided being a father was optional.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind him, his wife appeared in the doorway, eyes darting between us. She read the lawyer\u2019s letter over his shoulder and her expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me you were paying,\u201d she snapped.<\/p>\n

He stammered, suddenly small. \u201cI\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

I buckled Eli into the car seat when he came back out, humming to himself, unaware of the storm he\u2019d walked past.<\/p>\n
