Negron \u2014 the unmistakable voice behind some of Three Dog Night\u2019s most iconic hits \u2014 has died at the age of 83.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-d92323badb8b28485de4be749455aed4\" class=\"newsner-d92323badb8b28485de4be749455aed4 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p>The founding member of the legendary band passed away on Monday, Feb. 2, at his home in Studio City, California, surrounded by family, according to his publicist.<\/p>\n<p>In his final months, Negron had been battling heart failure along with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegron was a testament to never giving up \u2013 persevering through everything life throws at you, everything you may throw at yourself, and striving on,\u201d his publicist said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Born on June 8, 1942, Negron was raised in the Bronx by his father, Charles Negron, a Puerto Rican nightclub performer, and his mother, Elizabeth Rooke. But by our second verse, something magical happened. The audience started to cheer us on.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-a0a1967e0d2601006b9d606852a7441c\" class=\"newsner-a0a1967e0d2601006b9d606852a7441c newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>It was a moment that stayed with him for life, teaching Negron an early and powerful lesson that music has the ability to rise above barriers, differences, and prejudice, uniting people in ways nothing else can.<\/p>\n<p>He later moved west to attend California State University on a basketball scholarship, but music soon took center stage.<\/p>\n<p>While in Los Angeles, Negron teamed up with Danny Hutton and the late Cory Wells to form Three Dog Night in 1967 \u2014 a band celebrated for its bold harmonies and innovative sound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Negron\u2019s powerful vocals became the heartbeat of the group, leading on timeless hits like \u201cJoy to the World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog),\u201d \u201cOne (Is the Loneliest Number),\u201d \u201cOld Fashioned Love Song,\u201d \u201cThe Show Must Go On,\u201d and \u201cEasy to Be Hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At their height, Three Dog Night expanded to include guitarist Michael Allsup, along with the late Jimmy Greenspoon, Joe Schermie, and Floyd Sneed. But success came at a cost. The band ultimately unraveled at its peak, a collapse attributed in part to heavy drug use and internal conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>After the breakup, Negron and Hutton remained estranged for decades before finally reconnecting last year. According to Negron\u2019s publicist, the reunion came \u201cin a timely effort to exchange apologies and bury the hatchet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Negron\u2019s life offstage was marked by deep struggles. He battled drug addiction for years before achieving sobriety in 1991. The best-selling book detailed his rise to fame, addiction, near-death experiences, and ultimate recovery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-244754e826beeccb62e7a932b4613e7f\" class=\"newsner-244754e826beeccb62e7a932b4613e7f newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Even as COPD took a toll on his health, Negron continued touring well into his later years, stopping only when the COVID-19 pandemic made performing unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough his six decades of success, and all the ups-and-downs, his large, unconventional family was most important to him,\u201d his publicist said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chuck Negron is survived by his wife, Ami Albea Negron, and his children: Shaunti Negron Levick, Berry Oakley, Charles Negron III, Charlotte Negron, and Annabelle Negron.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>His voice \u2014 full of soul, grit, and heart \u2014 leaves behind a legacy that will echo through rock history for generations.
