He made you hate him on screen, but so many people have said he was incredibly likeable in real life.<\/p>\n<p>For everyone who looked up to him and hoped to become actors one day, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/50undercover.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/30\/exclusive-cary-hiroyuki-tagawa-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">once<\/a>\u00a0shared this advice:<\/p>\n<p>\u201dFirst, the worse possible thing that you could do as an actor is to start to believe the [Hollywood] hype.\u00a0Number two, go for the craft, and forget everything else\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Across a career spanning decades, Tagawa amassed more than 150 appearances in film and television. His movie credits ranged from cult favorites like\u00a0<em>Big Trouble in Little China<\/em>\u00a0to major studio releases including\u00a0<em>License to Kill<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Rising Sun<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Snow Falling on Cedars<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Pearl Harbor<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Planet of the Apes<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Elektra<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Memoirs of a Geisha<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>47 Ronin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On the small screen, he made memorable guest appearances on series such as\u00a0<em>MacGyver<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Miami Vice<\/em>, along with more substantial arcs on\u00a0<em>Nash Bridges<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hawaii<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Revenge<\/em>, and the animated series\u00a0<em>Blue Eye Samurai<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Among all his roles, none became more iconic than that of Shang Tsung, the sinister sorcerer from the\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>\u00a0universe. Tagawa first portrayed the character in New Line Cinema\u2019s 1995 film adaptation, returned for\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat: Annihilation<\/em>, and later revived the role in the 2013 series\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat: Legacy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His likeness and voice were also featured in the 2019 game\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat 11<\/em>\u00a0and the 2023 title\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat: Onslaught<\/em>. Images released with the announcement note:\u00a0<em>Tagawa passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning (Vincent Sandoval\/WireImage)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>\u00a0cemented him as a fan favorite, Tagawa\u2019s breakout came earlier with Bernardo Bertolucci\u2019s 1987 Oscar-winning\u00a0<em>The Last Emperor<\/em>, in which he played Chang, the emperor\u2019s driver\u2014a small but pivotal role that opened doors to the wave of film opportunities that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Tagawa\u2019s formidable on-screen physicality drew heavily from his lifelong martial arts training. Over time, he even created his own martial arts system, Chun-Shin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>His family confirmed that he passed away early Thursday morning, surrounded by his children, following complications from a stroke.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He is survived by his three children\u2014Calen, Brynne and Cana\u2014as well as two grandchildren, River and Thea Clayton.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa \u2014 American actor of Japanese descent, was mainly known as perfect villain of Hollywood.
