Rolling Stone confirmed his death on Monday, noting that the celebrated singer had been courageously fighting cancer.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"593\">A Defining Voice in American Music<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"876\">Malo co-founded the Grammy-winning Mavericks, a Miami-grown band known for its vibrant blend of country, Latin, and rockabilly influences. His powerful, emotive voice earned him the affectionate nickname \u201cEl Maestro,\u201d and it became a signature element of the group\u2019s dynamic sound.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1095\">The Mavericks made 15 appearances on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, most notably with their 1996 hit\u00a0<strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1025\">\u201cAll You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down\u201d<\/strong>, featuring accordion legend Flaco Jim\u00e9nez, which peaked at number 13.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1190\">Fans often praised Malo\u2019s remarkable consistency and artistry. He underwent surgery to remove a liver tumor, followed by an operation on his colon. By September 2025, Malo revealed he was also battling\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"1837\">leptomeningeal disease (LMD)<\/strong>, a rare cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1891\" data-end=\"2061\">Born on August 7, 1965, to Cuban immigrants who fled their homeland seeking safety and opportunity, Malo often spoke about the deep meaning behind his family\u2019s journey.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey came here to pursue the American dream \u2014 the promise that here in this country, you won\u2019t be persecuted for your religious beliefs, skin color or ethnicity,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>he told *Rolling Stone* in 2017.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<h2 data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2316\">Solo Career and Later Work<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2608\">After internal tensions and years of demanding touring, The Mavericks disbanded in 1999. Malo launched a successful solo career, releasing his debut album\u00a0<em data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2480\">Today<\/em>\u00a0in 2001. The band eventually reunited, and Malo\u2019s voice \u2014 richer and more resonant with time \u2014 once again became its heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2610\" data-end=\"2767\">In 2024, he revisited early, unrecorded material for what became\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2691\">Moon &amp; Stars<\/strong>, the band\u2019s 13th and final studio album. Describing the process, he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI went to the storage unit and opened the bin and it was like *Raiders of the Lost Ark*: hard drives, tapes, notebooks, DAT tapes, whatever we were recording on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reflecting on aging and artistry, he added with humor:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1738017579584-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWho\u2019s gonna believe that the years will not be kind?
